American habits you need to know before moving to the USA.

Updated: May 16

Immigrating is an exciting yet challenging decision.

Anyone living in a location different from their home country needs to adapt to the culture of their new home.

Knowing American habits before moving can ease your transition and contribute to a smoother, more integrated experience in society.

Among the numerous cultural characteristics of the USA, I've singled out in this email 3 of the main customs you need to know for a smoother adaptation. They are:

Tipping:

In the USA, tipping is a fundamental part of the service culture.

In many sectors, such as restaurants, taxis, beauty salons, and delivery services, it's expected that customers tip service providers in exchange for satisfactory service.

The common standard for tipping in restaurants, for example, is 15% to 22% of the total bill, but it can vary by state.

Not tipping or tipping inadequately can be seen as rude and disrespectful.

Punctuality:

Punctuality is highly valued in American culture and is considered a demonstration of respect for others' time.

Of course, in most cultures, being punctual shows responsibility and professionalism, but in the US, it's even more emphasized. If you make an appointment with an American and don't respect the agreed-upon time, your attitude will be frowned upon and seen as disrespectful.

Respecting personal space:

Americans value their personal space and tend to maintain a comfortable distance in social interactions.

During conversations, it's important to keep a respectful distance and avoid touching or getting too close unless invited.

Invading someone's personal space can be considered intrusive. Additionally, one should refrain from touching children or pets without the consent of their guardians, even in a casual and respectful situation.

So, were you already familiar with these customs? If you dream of living in American lands, it's important to start practicing them, as it will help you adapt to the new culture.
